“A Good Fit?”
Ever tried on something (hat, sweatshirt, dress, sandals) that was “one size fits all”? The label really should say, “one size fits none”!
When you hear that a couple is going to get married have you ever wondered if they are a good ‘fit’ for each other?
I love the car commercial where the guy drives a Corvette home from the dealership to be met by his wife and three small children. Next scene he is back at the dealership, with family, to pick out a mini-van. We even need automobiles that fit our lifestyles.
So…doesn’t it make sense that congregations should select a pastor who is a good fit for them? And doesn’t it also make sense that a pastor accepts a call to a congregation that is a good fit for their talents and sense of mission?
Over the next few weeks I’m going to offer up some thoughts to help Faith consider what type of pastor would be a good fit for us. It is true that we are working together with Bethany and Trinity to consider sharing pastoral leadership, but it is still a good for us to take a good look at who we are and what we need in a spiritual leader.
Some basic questions to be answered:
1) Who are you? How can you get a good fit is you don’t know your ‘size’? Several thoughts to ponder:
a. You are not the summation of surveys that you have taken over the past 12 years. (There are stacks of information)
b. You are not ‘the wish list’ of qualities that you would like in a new pastor, qualities to meet your perceived personal/family needs.c. You are not who you were 15 years ago.
d. What is your core (your center), without which you would not exist? What can you absolutely not live without?
Next week: Pastor as CEO
