“A message from Stewie: Gruntitude!”
How do you express your thanks for what others do for you?
Pigs just grunt as they are attacking their food. They have one thing on their mind and it is filling their big pig bellies. So grunting is how they say thanks. It is also how they complain, how they tell other pigs to move out of their way, also express contentment. So really…gratitude is not distinguishable from other swine communications…it is all grunting.
How do you express gratitude? Or is it not important to you? Do you just go on with your normal consuming life-style and assume that there will always be stuff for you, without concern about who or where it comes from? That attitude of gratitude would be “gruntitude”.
Real Gratitude can change your life and make you a happier person. Research has shown that keeping a five-minute a day gratitude journal can increase your long-term well-being by more than 10 percent. That’s the same impact as doubling your income! Sure, having more money can be pretty awesome, but because of hedonic adaptation we quickly get used to it and stop having as much fun and happiness as we did at first. Gratitude makes us feel more gratitude.
This is why a five-minute a week gratitude journal can make us so much happier. The actual gratitude produced during those five minutes is small, but the emotions of gratitude felt during those five-minutes are enough to trigger a grateful mood.
While in a grateful mood, we will feel gratitude more frequently, when we do feel gratitude it will be more intense and held for longer, and we will feel gratitude for more things at the same time.
In five words – gratitude triggers positive feedback loops.
So, do yourself…and all of us…a big favor: give up ‘gruntitude’ for gratitude.
Blessings from the Sty!
